Off the top, let me say that I know the correct pronunciation is Knee- ssan. This is a fact, like death and taxes. Yet whenever I go to actually say the word, 9/10 times what comes out of my stupid mouth-hole is Ni- ssan (Ni as in Nickel). I can’t help it. I guess I can attribute it to growing up in New England, which is probably second to only the South when it comes to embracing rampant mispronunciations as a regional quirk.

Anyway, my fiancee is from California where people are, I don’t know, more “aware” of “Japan,” and she teases me mercilessly whenever I say Ni- ssan. It hurts, but it’s OK because she says ape-ricot and what the hell is that?

Tomorrow marks the second time in two months I attempt to rent a Ford Focus for the weekend. If I get another Ni -ssan Versa I may shoot someone. So what do you guys say?

In what twisted world is a Versa equivalent to a Focus? (dimension and engine-wise, they are in two different categories)

It’s entirely fair to put this down to regional differences, but supposedly it is “Nee-san.”

In any case, of all the issues Nissan has at the moment, this is one where they’ll give you a pass. :-)

U.K. Niss-an.

Nee-san just sounds wrong.

from MCM’s secondary channel

as an Aussie I’ve always pronounced it “ni-ssn”, the second part of the word all jammed and hardly pronounced. The wife giggles.

Addidas is another one that she gets a good chuckle out of.

I once rented a full-size sedan (300 or equivalent), and they tried to put me in a camry because (and I quote): ‘’it has four door and it’s rather large, so it’s pretty much the same thing’’.

British, so Ni-ssan. Hyundai’s another one: we - and by ‘we’, I mean the British, and Hyundai’s own UK-market advertising - pronounce it Hi-Un-Die.

I still call them, and Infinitis, Datsuns. A former coworker used to get pissed at me whenever I called his ‘04 Maxima that.
Also, New England.

I have a friend that used to work for Hertz, and he gets all sort of confused about what size classes cars belong in. That job really messed him up. He has a hard time wrapping his mind around the fact that a Dart is technically a compact, not a midsize, and a 200 is a midsize, not a full-size. I asked him that, if that was the case, then where the hell do the Charger and 300 fit in? He said they were “premium sedans”, as if the word “premium” has anything at all to do with size.

I just go by how companies tell me to say their name. So Nissan is knee-san and Pall Mall is pel mel. If they tell people in other countries to say their names differently, then that’s just their choice.

I’m in the same situation with the word Audi. I know it’s supposed to be pronounced Ow-dee but every time I go to say it, it comes out as Aw-dee.

What’s funny is that I pronounce Murcielago, Gallardo and Huracan correctly but not a simple word like Audi.

Don’t you guys pronounce it like Ni-ssin or something or is that just a Top Gear thing?
